Food for Thought
The fog of the chilly night is lifting but still thick in the valley.
Fall colors coming on seem muted but are just beginning so we will see.
Our calves are already getting thick winter coats and some of the moms as well which is not a good sign. A cold, dry winter would be ideal but this one looks to be wet with fluctuating temps which usually means ice which is no fun when you live on a hill. Whatever it is we will take it.
I think of things when I am moving around the farm.
We are a very materialistic country.
We are blessed to be a country where you can pretty much get anything you want which has been a major factor in developing our culture and the way we act.
That’s it I think I saw an ad for some $600.00 sneakers or something like that. A crazy adidas running shoe. We buy crazy sneakers, cell phones, clothes, cars whatever it is we strive for the best.
So I am driving around the farm yesterday and it pops in to my head, “why not the food?”. Ok maybe I shouldn’t drive around the farm but really why not the food?”
We spend all kinds of money on all kinds of things but don’t focus on the basic building block of our health and quality of our lives.
Our population has and ever shortening lifespan, we are the most unhealthy developed nation in the world and quite frankly the food in this country sucks.
So why not the food?
Why are we as a country, fully knowing the effects of poor, low nutritional value, toxic food willing to look the other way?
Why is everyone focused on cheap food?
Why is the cost of food such a big thing?
If I go to buy food and I am buying something of quality the last thing I look at is the price.
I cannot imagine being price sensitive about food.
A car? A phone? Sneakers? Oh absolutely.
When it comes to one of the most, if not the most, important things that will determine how I live my life out and how the health of my children will be in the future I cannot imagine thinking twice about it.
What are we thinking as a country that we are not pushing to have small farms filling our refrigerators?
There are over 1,100 chemicals that go in to the production of food in this country.
The head of the USDA is full of it and has not helped small farms yet. Not even in his tenure with Obama.
I just don’t understand why this oh so obvious issue continues to not only go unaddressed but people just don’t care.
One of my favorite people out there once told me, “John I would rather drive a jalopy to the farmer’s market than a nice car to the supermarket.” He is right.
What do you have if you don’t have your health?
And there you have it.
Something from just a little ride up the hill on the farm.
And some really good FOOD for thought.
